Correspondence to Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel, 1900-1943.

ArchivalResource

Correspondence to Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel, 1900-1943.

Includes 4 original items: 2 letters that Alma Mahler inserted between the pages of her diary at the entries for 9. May and 14. August 1900 (see Suite 17 in Tagebuch-Suiten ed. Beaumont and Rode-Breymann); and 2 letters dated 1943 and 1946, respectively, 1 of these addressed to Franz Werfel (concerning his novel Der veruntreute Himmel) and 1 addressed to Alma Mahler (concerning her memoir Gustav Mahler: Memories and Letters). The remaining items exist in the form of typescripts. 3 of the typescripts convey excerpts from letters written in 1904 and 1905 by Erika Tietze-Conrat and, in 1 instance, apparently by Ida Conrat, to unknown recipients; in the excerpts Erika and Ida discuss visits with Alma and Gustav Mahler. (Tietze-Conrat apparently lent Alma the letters to make the typescripts.) 8 of the typescripts date from 1912 to 1922; in this period there are some references to Kokoschka, and 2 poems by Tietze-Conrat are included. The typescripts include explanatory annotations in Alma Mahler's hand.
